MAAYA: Multimedia Methods to Support Maya Epigraphic Analysis

This paper present an overview of a research project integrating epigraphy and computer science, which has developed a number of visual analysis methods for segmentation, classification, indexing, and retrieval of Maya glyphs in ancient codices. The paper summarizes the technical aspects of the methods developed for these tasks, including preparation of source materials, creation of a data repository, segmentation of glyph strokes, classification of single glyphs, and visualization of glyph collections. The developed methods, based on computer vision and machine learning, are generic and could be applicable to other sources of visual data in the digital humanities.
